
Paul
Cater Deaton has been in the film/television production industry since
1978. Paul earned a reputation as a highly-respected Key Grip, and has become an award-winning Writer,
Producer, Director and Cameraman. He cultivated his filmmaking talents in
Austin, Texas, and honed his underwater production skills during eight
years of living in the Virgin Islands. He has held such staff positions as Production Manager for TV2 Caribbean, Director for Live Broadcast at Austin Music Network, and Producer/Director for Creative Services at KGBT-TV (CBS).
Shooting on five continents over the past 27 years, Paul has earned numerous awards for professional
excellence. These include Addy, Communicator, Videographer, Aegis and
Telly Awards. Paul's 2002 film "Egypt: Karnak to Coral Reef" earned a Bronze Telly. His interpretation of "Sol del Caribe" by Teye and
Viva El Flamenco was named "Best Music Video" at the 2004
Austin Music Awards at South by Southwest.
"I
began as a 'private' and worked my way to 'general' in this business,"
says Deaton of his rise to acclaim as a producer. He is highly
sought-after in his field, and engages in productions ranging from
commercials, music videos and documentaries to TV programs and full-length
motion pictures.
He has
worked on productions appearing on ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS, BBC, CMT, HBO, MTV,
VH1, Fox, Nickelodeon, Showtime, Warner Brothers, Paramount, Tri-Star,
Veronica Broadcasting (The Netherlands), ARD German Television, Austin Music Network, Caribbean
Broadcasting Union, TV2 Caribbean, the Travel Channel, Comedy Central, and at the United
Nations.
Deaton
is currently developing a television series pilot relative to SCUBA diving
and adventure travel on the Caribbean Sea. Episodes on St. Thomas, Saba,
Bonaire, Curaçao, Dominica and the wreck of RMS Rhone have already been
completed. His latest documentary is "LST-467: An Undersea Reunion."
During
the spring and summer of 2002, Paul went on two separate expeditions to
north Africa, where he shot underwater in the Red Sea, and land-based
operations in Egypt and the Sinai. The resulting film, "Egypt - Karnak to
Coral Reef," received a Bronze Telly Award. Negotiations for distribution
are underway, and it is expected to air on international television.
Paul
Cater Deaton is a popular lecturer, and screens his productions at film
festivals and dive shows from coast to coast to coast. His "Lights!
Camera! Ocean!" workshop on underwater production techniques is a
favourite among both emerging and veteran shooters. Paul's seminars and
film screenings have become staples of such prestigeous SCUBA/Adventure
Travel shows as Houston's SEASPACE, and the Boston Sea Rovers.
His
productions have found audiences worldwide, and his writings have been
published internationally. As a drummer/percussionist, his tracks are
conspicuous on two record albums, and he has performed internationally
with countless musicians. Raised on a family ranch in Texas, he is also an expert horseman, and won several trophies at AQHA shows. He has been a NAUI-certified SCUBA Instructor since 1992, and is
certified in Mixed Gas Diving and Rebreather Technologies.
Paul
is a member of the Board of Directors of the
Texas Society of the Virgin Islands. He is a member of Rotary International, Texas Association of Film/Tape Professionals, the Gerson-Lehman Council of Media Advisors,
Diving Equipment and Marketing Association, Divers Alert Network, National Association of Underwater Instructors, National Multiple Sclerosis
Society, National Breast Cancer Foundation, and the Boston Sea Rovers. He
also serves as an advisor to Senator Shawn-Michael Malone, of the Virgin
Islands Legislature.
