"Lights! Camera! Ocean!" is a workshop in
adapting film/television-style production techniques to the underwater
environment. This popular symposium was developed by Paul Cater Deaton to
help camera operators take their skills beneath the waves with a greater
degree of safety, comfort and proficiency.
Deaton draws from
experiences accrued over 26 years and on five continents as a professional
cameraman, and 12 years as a NAUI-certified SCUBA instructor. Levity,
instruction and dialogue walk hand-in-hand throughout "Lights! Camera!
Ocean!" as the group discovers new methods of creating memorable
underwater productions. It also includes a feature on "Guerrilla Editing" in the field, so that the production can be enjoyed while the divers are still on their dive trip.
Each
workshop is tailored to the aggregate skill levels of those in attendance.
As such, "Lights! Camera! Ocean!" is ever-evolving. Elements discussed in
a typical symposium include camera movement and buoyancy control, the
special considerations which arise when using the sea as a studio,
interaction between models and the marine resource, care and feeding of
very expensive equipment, systems andpersonnel selection,
expedition preparation and execution, and airport security in post 9/11
international travel.
Some
workshops may include SCUBA diving and underwater camera operation.
Participants wishing to dive must present a valid SCUBA certification
card, proof of membership in Divers Alert Network or similar program, and
be responsible for arranging their own SCUBA and underwater camera
equipment.
